External content types and RSS feeds

I have some external content types on information and have been asked for ways in which users could monitor changes in the data being reflected into SharePoint 2010.

The first thought was RSS feeds, but there appears to be some possible shortcomings with that?

A second thought was to set up alerts on an External Content list.

We would prefer to avoid custom code due to limited access to resources with appropriate experience.

Is anyone aware of articles in books or online magazines, slide decks, or other sources - even if it is just talking it through here on the forum - for accomplishing such a function?
