List content type in Visual Studio solution

Is it necessary to create a site content type when creating a list template and instance in a Visual Studio solution for SP2010?

I want to create a list definition/instance but do not need a site content type.  When adding fields to the list template, they do not appear in the NewForm, EditForm or DispForm. 

Can I just create a list content type alone?
