Custom Action javascript

Hello ,

i have created a  custom action in the ribbon of custom list  which create an item in a sharepoint list and i would like  to add some javascript to my custom action so that if the item exist in the list , the user get a popup or an alert with a message "item exist " .

how to reach my requirement ?
